Keeping the Floor Through Circumlocution
¿Qué vas a lograr?
Por ejemplo, si olvidas "screwdriver", di *"the tool you use to turn screws"*. Esto mantiene tu turno activo y demuestra fluidez estratégica.
Errores comunes de hispanohablantes:
• No digas *"how do you say...?"* en medio de una discusión formal. Mejor usa *"the word I'm looking for is..."* o *"I can't quite recall the term, but..."*.
• Para ganar tiempo: *"Let me think about that for a moment..."*
• Para reformular: *"What I mean to say is..."* o *"In other words..."*
• Para autocorregirte: *"Or rather..."* o *"Let me rephrase that..."*
Practica encadenarlos: si te equivocas, corrige con *"or rather"* y sigue.

Circumlocution, Paraphrase and Discourse Markers for Monitoring and Repair[Reformulation marker] + [paraphrase / circumlocution of the concept]
• the kind of thing that + descripción: *"It's the kind of thing that you use to open a bottle."*
• if I can't recall the exact term + reformulación: *"If I can't recall the exact term, I'd say it's a device for measuring time."*
• what I mean is → aclara tu idea.
• in other words → resume o simplifica.
• let me put it another way → cambia el enfoque.
• more specifically → añade precisión.
• roughly speaking → da una aproximación.
• as I was saying → retomas el hilo tras una interrupción.
• *"Sorry, let me rephrase that."* → corriges sobre la marcha.
Estructura típica:
[marcador de reformulación] + [paráfrasis del concepto]
*"The policy wasn't entirely effective; in other words, it failed to address the root causes."*
When I say 'sustainable', I don't mean just eco-friendly; what I mean is a system that can maintain itself over time.
Your argument seems contradictory; let me put it another way: you're claiming both that the market is free and that it's heavily regulated.
Cuando no encuentres la palabra, usa the kind of thing that o if I can't recall the exact term para describir el concepto mientras tu cerebro busca el término exacto.
"Lo que quiero decir es" NO es *"the what I want to say is"*, sino what I mean is. Y "déjame decirlo de otra manera" NO es *"let me say it of another way"*, sino let me put it another way.
No abuses de los marcadores. Usar in other words o more specifically en cada frase suena artificial y robótico.

Keeping the Floor Through Circumlocution
Have you ever drawn a blank in the middle of an English conversation? It happens to everyone. The important thing is not knowing every word, but knowing how to keep talking when a word does not come to mind.
In this lesson, you will learn to keep the floor using circumlocution and paraphrase strategies. You will discover how to explain an idea using other words, correct yourself without losing the thread, and keep the conversation flowing.
What will you achieve?
• Explain a concept when you cannot recall the exact term.
• Rephrase an idea so your listener understands you better.
• Correct yourself naturally, without interrupting the flow.
• Use discourse markers that give you time to think.
The key idea
Think of these phrases as bridges: they take you from one idea to another while your brain searches for the right word. With practice, you will sound more fluent and confident, even without perfect vocabulary.
We will work with a realistic scenario: an academic conversation where you need to explain a complex concept without using the exact word. Let us begin!
Al terminar podrás✓ Can use circumlocution and paraphrase to maintain a fluent turn when a word is unavailable.✓ Can demonstrate effective self-correction while keeping the discussion moving.
