Reporting a Debate with Precision
Cuando escuchas o participas en una discusión académica, no basta con decir *'he said'* o *'she said'*.
¿Qué vas a lograr?
• Sintetizar argumentos con frases como *shed light on*, *lend support to* y *present a compelling argument*.

Di *"She suggested that the team review the data"*, NO *"...that the team reviews..."*.
• "Deny + -ing": tras *deny* nunca uses *to + verbo*. Di *"He denied making that point"*, no *"He denied to make..."*.
• Concede y disclose suelen ir seguidos de *that + cláusula*: *"She conceded that the argument had merit"*.
Verbos de reporte: suggest + that + subjuntivo, deny + -ing
Reporting verbs: suggest + that + subjunctive, deny + -ingsuggest + that + subject + base verb | deny + gerund (-ing)
1. suggest + that + subjuntivo
• The panel suggested that the committee review the data.
• She suggested that he address the concerns first.
2. deny + -ing
• The minister denied withholding the report.
• They denied reaching a consensus behind closed doors.
Verbos similares: recommend también usa that + subjuntivo (The expert recommended that the team disclose the findings.).

Ejemplo
suggest + that + subjuntivo
suggest that + sujeto + verbo base
The panel suggested that the committee review the data.
deny + -ing
deny + gerundio
The minister denied withholding the report.
recommend + that + subjuntivo
recommend that + sujeto + verbo base
The expert recommended that the team disclose the findings.
The economist suggested that the government address the concerns before reaching a consensus.
The minister denied disclosing the details, but the opposition contended that the evidence lends support to the accusation.
Decimos suggest that he go, no suggest that he goes. Esto aplica también a recommend that.
No uses to después de deny: decimos deny doing something, nunca deny to do something.

Reporting a Debate with Precision
In this lesson, you will learn to report a debate with precision. When you listen to or take part in an academic discussion, it is not enough to say *'he said'* or *'she said'*. You need verbs that capture the exact force of each intervention.
What will you achieve?
• Report positions with precise verbs such as *assert*, *contend* and *concede*.
• Convey the original form of what was said using *suggest that + subjunctive* and *deny + -ing*.
• Synthesize arguments with phrases such as *shed light on*, *lend support to* and *present a compelling argument*.
Why is this important?
In academic and professional contexts, precision in reporting is key. Saying that someone *'asserted'* an idea is not the same as saying that they *'suggested'* that idea. The first verb implies firmness; the second, a proposal open to discussion. Mastering these nuances will allow you to mediate between positions and reach a consensus effectively.
The scenario
Imagine you attend a seminar on the future of technology and society. Two speakers hold opposing views. Your task will be to report their arguments with the precision of a professional analyst.
