CONTEXTO

• La estructura there was / there were para hablar del pasado. ¡Vamos a explorar!

EXPLICACIÓN

Teoría y puntos clave

There was / There were: el pasado de "hay" Para hablar de lugares en el pasado, usamos there was (singular) y there were (plural). Es el pasado de *there is / there are*. Ejemplo: *There was a lake near the coast* (Había un lago cerca de la costa) vs. *There were two forests* (Había dos bosques). Errores comunes y trucos • No digas "there was two": si el sustantivo es plural, siempre *there were*.

Enfoque gramaticalThere Was / There Were
GRAMÁTICA

There was / There were (Había)

There was / There wereThere + was/were + (not) + noun + place

Usamos there was (singular) y there were (plural) para hablar de cosas que existían en el pasado. Es el pasado de *there is* y *there are*. • There was + sustantivo singular: There was a lake. (Había un lago.) • There were + sustantivo plural: There were two forests. La estructura es: There + was/were + lugar. Para negar, usamos there wasn't (singular) y there weren't (plural): There wasn't a desert. (No había un desierto.)

FormaSingularPlural
AfirmativoThere was a lake. There were two lakes.
NegativoThere wasn't a lake.There weren't two lakes.
PreguntaWas there a lake? Were there two lakes?

There was a small village near the coast.

There were many trees in the forest.Había muchos árboles en el bosque.

Tip: En español, "había" sirve para singular y plural. En inglés, debes elegir was (singular) o were (plural). Piensa en el sustantivo que sigue.
Error común: No digas *"There was two lakes"*. Como *two lakes* es plural, debes usar were: *"There were two lakes"*.
